Why Playgrounds For Elders?

"Boomers have long been famous for their desire to stay or at least act young...
[They] created the jogging fad in the 1970s and turned aerobics into a multi-billion dollar industry in the 1980s, [and] are now returning to fitness centers in record numbers."
Congressional Quarterly, 2007

Wellness Playgrounds in the US
...and in other countries
Newer residential communities for elders invest in indoor exercise rooms. However, these are far from being wellness playgrounds; they are workout rooms. They do not get elders outdoors, and promote very little social interaction. Furthermore, indoor workout rooms do little to build the valuable sense of community and belonging among residents. Other industrialized countries have even older populations than the U.S. Perhaps this is one reason why wellness playgrounds for elders, little known in the U.S., abound in China and Japan, where they first appeared in the 1990s. In the 2000s, elders' playgrounds have also become increasingly popular in Europe & Canada.
